MTV announced they’ve created a new awards show that focuses on digital content – namely music and social media – coming to your computers sometime this Spring. Yes, this awards show is web-only with the intention of bringing the social conversation into the spotlight. It’s still in the development stages, so there aren’t any clear categories yet, nor is there a date scheduled, but you can tell it’s going to be a spectacle one way or another.

Hopefully…hopefully, MTV gets smart with this idea and focuses on the actual people pioneering the digital music and social media world instead of on the garbage their current awards shows feature. I want to see awards for best viral campaign, best web-only music video or best music blogs, not best Twitter beef and cutest Facebook profile – or whatever terrible crap they could likely think of. We’ll see what happens, but I just don’t see them straying too far from a lot of the content their brand is already aligned with.

Read what MTV had to say.

I missed out on the YouTube Play live webcast last night (Giants game), but I’ve been going over some of the clips today and it looks like the event was pretty amazing. We’ve already started acknowledging the talents of creators on YouTube, but getting the Guggenheim involved kicks it up a major notch. I’d happily explain the event to you in more detail, but I suggest watching this video with cool people like Andy Berndt (VP of Google Creative Labs) and Nancy Spector (Chief Curator of the Guggenheim), plus epic jurors like artist Marilyn Minter and uber-designer Stefan Sagmeister. Also check out the crazy projections that were set up for the event in the second video. Don’t we all wish we had a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece as our projection canvas?

This past weekend I attended the inaugural Vimeo Awards . As a bona fide video nerd, I have to say it was pretty cool. Lots of camera geeks, filmmakers, plaid shirts, beards, plaid shirts, and booze. Hightlights included the awards ceremony, which I was lucky enough to snag a ticket to, but was bummed and stupid for not having watched the finalists beforehand. Even though we were served snippets of the finalists, I was intrigued enough to go back to the site and start watching them all. Ze Frank was a solid host, even though the telemprompter was fucking him up all night. Favorite quote of his from the night, “In 2003, the average length of video people watched online was 7 seconds. Now people watch full length features.” BOOM!

I’m kinda pshyced to see the fest winner “Last Minutes with ODEN” Doc is so in right now. BTW unrelated note… Catfish” was kinda ill right?

Cinema Speakeasy is a monthly independent film screening in Los Angeles that builds community around local filmmakers through group screenings, workshops and providing marketing and creative support. The idea is that filmmakers in other cities will replicate the non-profit’s platform, sprouting other Cinema Speakeasy’s around the globe and further strengthening the independent film scene. Already one has started up in Philly and there will soon be another in San Francisco. Recently, the founders broke out of their indie shell to celebrate their first anniversary with a screening of 90’s film Reality Bites plus an incorporated drinking game!

If you’re a filmmaker in Los Angeles or just passing through town, CS is looking for submissions for their September 7th event and also their horror-themed event on October 19th.

Stop… drop… open up a film festival. We haven’t heard enough about Damon aka Dame Dash’s Creative Control TV… how is that possible? Dame typically bangs his self-promo drum pretty loudly. CreativeControl.tv is his latest (as far as we know) spinoff post HOVA split. It’s difficult to figure out exactly what it is, but it appears to be a stand alone content channel that features the cool of the cool’s music videos, odd’s and ends, and few cute online video shows. It’s tough also to determine whether this is Dame’s beta test attempt to further himself as digital media mogul, or if it’s sincerely an attempt to provide a platform for artists to retain “creative control” amidst a sea of brand driven content. Regardless, he has uber talented directors Coodie and Chike signed on, so from that stand point, it gets dap.

Also deserving of dap is a nice looking film festival called “SPECIAL OFFER” they’re putting on at Dash’s gallery, (directed by Katrina Lencek-Inagaki) this week. With screenings of people’s work we like, it should prove to be worth stopping by. If you’re in a fly over state and can’t go… sorry.

April 22-25th, at Damon Dash’s gallery in TriBeCa, The Dash Gallery, at 172 Duane Street.
