NY Mag’s Vulture blog recently did a post about HBO star Danny McBride distancing himself from the famous Twitter account of his Eastbound and Down character Kenny Powers. Though many believe he is the person behind the famous @KFUCKINGP account, the credit actually goes to a “twentysomething from New York City with aspirations in comedy writing.” McBride sent an email to Vulture explaining “Kenny Powers is a full-grown man, so he would never Twitter,” but admitted: “Knowing that it’s a very funny committed fan makes us proud.” Of course, this “committed fan” is really hoping the success of his ghost-tweeting can further his comedy writing career.
This stunt is a huge short cut in this guy’s self-promotion. Why start a Twitter account under his own name, when posing as Kenny Powers will draw much more attention to his comedic writing style? It’s not the most honorable route, but you have to give the guy credit for this clever approach. So what’s next? Aspiring advertising exec starts the @DonaldDraper account?
