Derek Beckles might be the greatest videoartist of our time. His pilot for Adult Swim was deemed too weird/offensive. For Adult Swim. his Frankenstein amalgams of 80s/90s vhs pretty much created an entire scene of weirdos scouting flea markets and garages sales for hard to find VHS gems. And his latest opus, “Let’s Work It Out” is a fucking a behemoth. I got a chance to check it out at a screening in MTL over the weekend and it is literally, a monster. After scouring through hundreds of (rightfully) forgotten workout videos, Derek has compiled a weird, nonsensical piece that moves like a well crafted mixtape. It’s both hilarious and prosaic. It’s also terrible.
