hulu-logoEver since I got into new media, in the wild-west days of 2005, when the hottest story was Myspace being acquired by News Corp. and sites like MetaCafe and Veoh still thought they had a shot to usurp Youtube as the king of online video, people have been saying that the internet was on the precipice of making television irrelevant. Well, as 2010 is about to start, TV is still alive and kicking, despite inroads made by online video players. In other words, we’re all still holding our collective breath.

Brandon and I we’re discussing Hulu’s announcement of their partnership with Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment to produce a 30-minute, exclusive-for-the-web reality show, and I couldn’t help wondering whether this will mark some kind of turning point for internet television. Sure there have been plenty of other 30-minute, high-budget web-series to find a little bit of success, but Hulu’s success has been predicated by the fact that it was the online home of broadcast content. If any site can elevate exclusive web content to the level of actual TV, it’s Hulu. So we will watch and wait, and possibly consider cutting off our cable, though probably not.
