Interesting way to track bands popularity online

So I recently got wise to a new school way to track the popularity of artists. Next Big Sound, a startup that allows you to track musicians popularity based on the amount of views, plays and comments their profiles/songs get on like MySpace,Twitter and Last.fm. I always wonder if the music I’m feeling is getting as much attention across the internet as I feel like it is. I mean usually it’s not, but that’s because I’m just too next level. Still, I’m sure both artists, as well as labels, managers, press folks, publicists and bookers are gonna make this (or something like it) a standard in terms of gauging what’s really hot.

I played around with it, and found out U-N-I and Tabi Bonney are breaking through (U-N-I is REALLY breaking through), while Cadence Weapon and ApSci have a waaaaaaaaaaay to go. It’d be great if they could also integrate some of the old school, Billboard ways of tracking bands popularity, such as radio and video play. Or, god-forbid, purchases. Also, NBS, where’s the Youtube stats? What about plays/searches on elbo.ws and Hype Machine? It’s a cool idea, but if they step they’re game up, I think they have a good chance of becoming an essential to whatever the music industry decides it’s going to become.
